Antique Traveler's/Lap Writing Desk (1800's)
A gorgeous example of a “traveler’s” or “lap” desk from the 1800’s. These appeared on the scene in the 17th century and grew to become a stylish accessory, compact enough to be carried on a horse or underarm. Once opened, there are various compartments inside as well as a purple velvet lined writing surface. At the top of the lid is a brass hook and eye clasp which, when released, reveals a compartment to store paper. The base of the box also has a “hidden” compartment, we assume for pens and other accessories as well as four open receptacles, designed to hold ink/inkwells. The top of the box boasts a gorgeous and well-worn ornate handpainted design. There is a lock on the box, however the skeleton key is missing. Age-appropriate wear to the exterior, as shown. A remarkably beautiful object, that remains functional in use. What an incredible gift idea for that writer in your life!
Dimensions [3.5” high x 12” across x 8.25” deep; when opened, writing surface is 13.5” x 11”]
