Original Oil on Canvas by August Rixen (Germany, 1897-1949)
Original oil on stretched canvas, signed “a. Rixen.” We are attributing this to listed artist, August Rixen, based on style, subject, age of the canvas/frame, and signature. Rixen was a German artist (1897-1949) and several of his works have sold at auction. On the reverse is a sticker from the shop in which it was framed, “New York Frame & Picture Co.” of 116 Fulton Street in NYC. According to our research this business existed at this location from 1894 to the 1960’s. Based on the frame construction (and aforementioned characteristics), we are placing this piece as likely from the 1920’s, possibly 30’s. The painting itself is stunning and in very good condition for its age.
The carved wood frame, painted gold, exhibits some wear. There is a raised inlay on the interior of the frame, consisting of 4 separate pieces of wood. The left hand side has come unglued, as pictured. It could be re-glued, however we have left it as-is, for fear of damaging the canvas. Likely a manageable fix for someone who knows what they are doing and/or it could be reframed.
